New Delhi: The Indian Army will participate in a two-week multi-nation military exercise in Nizhny, Russia from Friday aimed at promoting counter-terrorism cooperation.
Officials said more than a dozen countries will take part in the ‘Japad’ exercise, which will mainly focus on counter-insurgency operations. China and Pakistan are also expected to participate in the exercise as observers.
The Defense Ministry said that a contingent of 200 Indian Army personnel will participate in the exercise to be held from September 3-16.
ZAPAD is one of the theater level exercises of the Russian Armed Forces and will primarily focus on operations against terrorists.
“The Naga battalion group participating in the exercise will feature an all-arms combined task force. The aim of the exercise is to enhance military and strategic ties between the participating countries,” the ministry said.
“The Indian contingent has been put through a rigorous training program that covers all aspects of conventional operations including mechanized, aerial and heliborne, counter-terrorism, combat conditioning and firing,” it added.
Separately, the Indian and Kazakh armies began a 13-day military exercise on Wednesday.
“India-Kazakhstan joint military exercise KAZIND-21 began today at the training of Node Aisha Bibi in Kazakhstan,” an official said.
This is the fifth edition of the annual bilateral exercise by both the armies. The fourth edition of the exercise was conducted in September 2019 at Pithoragarh.
A total of 90 jawans of Bihar Regiment of Indian Army are participating in the exercise.
The scope of the exercise includes professional exchanges, planning and execution of operations in a counter-terrorism environment and sharing of expertise.
