Cabinet minister Piyush Goyal says government has explicitly asked Hyundai to be more empowered in apology
Hyundai Motor India recently issued a statement regarding the controversial tweet posted by a Hyundai Pakistan dealer supporting ‘Kashmir Solidarity Day’. However, several Twitterati expressed their opinion that the South Korean carmaker was not clear in its statement and asked for a more direct apology. Now similar views have been expressed by the Government of India. Cabinet Minister for Textiles, Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal has said that the Indian government has “categorically asked the company to be more empowered in apology”.

The deleted post was shared on the social media handle of Hyundai Pakistan, a dealer principal who has outlets across Pakistan
A Twitter account of Hyundai Nishat Motor Pvt on 5 February. Ltd., a dealer principal of outlets across Pakistan had put up a post on ‘Kashmir Solidarity Day’ supporting the separatists in Kashmir. The tweet went viral in no time, and it didn’t take long for the hashtag #boycotthyundai to trend on the social media platform.
In reply, Hyundai Motor India issued an official statement which said, “Hyundai Motor India has been committed to the Indian market for over 25 years now and we stand firmly for our strong ethos of respecting nationalism. Hyundai Motor India Unsolicited social media posts linking India are outrageous. Our unparalleled commitment and service to this great country. We have a zero-tolerance policy towards insensitive communications, and we strongly condemn any such approach. As part of our commitment to this, we will also continue our efforts for the betterment of the country as our citizens.”

Now, Hyundai India has issued a new statement, which clearly defines the situation it is addressing and says that it has taken necessary action. The company’s latest statement said – “As a business policy, Hyundai Motor Company does not comment on political and religious issues in any specific region. Therefore, it is clearly against the policy of Hyundai Motor that independent companies in Pakistan Wholly owned distributor made unauthorized Kashmir-related social media posts from their own accounts.” It added, “We have taken measures to ensure that the distributor, who has misused the identity of the Hyundai brand, removes social media posts and we have put in place procedures to prevent recurrence in the future. The subsidiary Hyundai Motor India is not associated with the distributor. In Pakistan, and we strongly disapprove of the distributor’s unauthorized non-commercial social media activity.”

Hyundai India is not the first global carmaker to operate in both India and Pakistan, which has been embroiled in a controversy due to social media posts on ‘Kashmir Day’ posted by their Pakistani counterparts. Earlier, Toyota Defense Motors in Pakistan also posted a similar communication on their social media channels on February 5, 2021, and so did some other brands like Isuzu in the past.

Pakistani counterparts of some other fast food brands such as KFC, Domino’s Pizza and Pizza Hut have also issued similar posts in the past, leading to a boycott of the hashtag on social media.
