Former British Chancellor of Indian origin Rishi Sunak became the Prime Minister of Britain on Monday (October 24). Sunak became Britain’s first Indian-origin prime minister, replacing former prime minister Liz Truss. Sunak, the first Indian-origin UK PM, now also holds the title of becoming the youngest UK Prime Minister in modern history at the age of 42.
Rishi Sunak, born to an Indian family in Southampton, UK, is the son of a pharmacist mother and a National Health Service (NHS) general practitioner father.
An alumnus of Oxford and Stanford University, Sunak is married to Akshata Murthy, daughter of billionaire businessman NR Narayana Murthy, who founded Infosys. Earlier in April, reports of Akshata’s non-domicile status and alleged tax evasion created a ruckus. Rishi Sunak claimed that she is paying all the taxes. Her spokesperson said Akshata Murthy had “continued to always pay UK taxes on all her UK income”.
Congratulations! @RishiSunak On being appointed leader of the Conservative Party and as our next Prime Minister.
You have my full support. — Liz Truss (@trussliz) 24 October 2022
Former UK PM Liz Truss, who stepped down after only 45 days, also congratulated Sunak on being appointed as the new Prime Minister of the United Kingdom.
