Indian Police Service: Know its Origin and Connection with UPSC Exam

Many Indian teenagers aspire to become an IPS officer and join the Indian Police Service. An IPS officer helps the government in maintaining law and order and dealing with emergencies. The IPS however is not a stand-alone police force. Instead, senior officers for various branches of the police force are selected at the central, state and international levels from a pool of professionally trained officers.

The IPS was established in 1948, after India gained its independence. The earlier Indian Imperial Police was replaced by this newly established police force. The IPS, along with the Indian Administrative Service (IAS) and the Indian Forest Service (IFS), is one of the three respected all-India services recognized by the Constitution of India.

To become an IPS officer, a candidate has to clear the Civil Services Examination (CSE) conducted every year by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC). Additionally, CSE serves as a requirement for posts in IAS, IRS and IFS. Promotion to IPS rank from State Officer Service post is another way to get this post.

UPSC CSE exam is conducted in three phases- preliminary, mains and interview. This year the Prelims stage is going to be conducted on 28th May after which the qualified students will appear for Mains which will be conducted in September. The final stage of selection will be the interview.

This exam is open only for Indian citizens. The minimum age of the candidate should be 21 years. Candidates can appear for the Civil Services Examination if they have completed their graduation from a recognized university or are in the final year of their studies. Apart from meeting the age and education requirements, an IPS officer must be in good physical and mental health. There are a total of six chances for the general category applicants to clear the Civil Services Examination.
