Indian Premier League 2021 | Punjab Kings beat SRH in thriller

A certain Murphy S. Law has spent more time this season than he has around David Warner and Sunrisers Hyderabad. On Saturday, SRH were out of contention for the playoff spot with a five-run loss against Punjab Kings in Sharjah.

Jason Holder’s power-hitting on death (47 off 29) raised hopes of a rare victory. But IPL debutant Nathan Ellis successfully defended 17 runs in the final over to get the PBKS campaign back on track.

Defending a modest target of 126 runs, Mohammed Shami overtook Warner in his opening over. In his next over, he gave Kane Williamson a cut from the seam at the back turned back. Shami’s first spell read 3-1-5-2 as SRH posted 20 for two, the lowest Powerplay total ever.

On the wicket on which the ball was taking a grip and turn, Ravi Bishnoi (3 for 24) clean bowled Manish Pandey.

SRH had completed 50 runs in the 12th over when Bishnoi made it worse by dismissing Kedar Jadhav and Abdul Samad in the same over.

Holder and Wriddhiman Saha shared a 31-run partnership and the latter was run out after a terrible mix. Needing 21 for 12, Arshdeep Singh bowled a brilliant 19th over, conceding four runs and taking a wicket.

scattered display

Asked to bat, PBKS’s powerplay was a scattered display of pace and some luck against awkward boundaries.

Holder comes in the fifth over and hits a boundary off the first ball as KL Rahul hits J. Hit a straight blow to substitute Suchit. Holder dismissed Mayank Agarwal after three balls. Aiden Markram was dismissed by Sandeep Sharma in the next over. But the ball went out of Saha’s hand.

Chris Gayle, playing the first game of the second leg, was dismissed lbw by Rashid Khan. In the next over, Nicholas Pooran took a quick return catch of Sandeep.

Samad then took Markram’s count and Suchit took a one-handed catch to dismiss Deepak Hooda. However, the final over of 14 runs took PBKS to a total which proved to be enough in the end.
