India’s traditional PC market comprising desktops, notebooks and workstations shipped another strong quarter of 4.3 million units during the period January to March 2022, registering a year-on-year (YOY) growth of 37.7%, International Data Corporation (IDC) said. May 19.

While the notebook category continued to be the volume driver with 3.1 million units, the desktop category saw over one million units for the first time since 3Q2014, it reported. Improvements in the government segment continued to drive consumer demand and a channel inventory push from sellers helped the market remain upbeat, it said.

PC demand remained strong across sectors as people continued to buy PCs for distance learning and work. With the end of the financial year in Q1 (January-March), the government segment witnessed a significant recovery, with enterprise and SME purchases remained upbeat and grew by 47.2% and 31.7%, respectively. Additionally, according to data provided by IDC, sellers tried to buy enough stock in anticipation of supply delays due to the lockdown in China.

The research organization said that while the share of online channels was 13.4 per cent and saw a growth of 17.5 per cent year-on-year, offline channels grew by 41.4%.

Bharat Shenoy, Senior Market Analyst, PC Devices, IDC India said, “The consumer segment remained positive as it witnessed an impressive year-on-year growth of 27.9%. While e-tail channels experienced good traction, easing of restrictions related to COVID-19 led to an increase in retail footfall as an increase in the number of people started buying PCs from offline stores, leading to a strong consumer quarter .”

With schools and colleges reopening, sellers were back-to-school campaigns in Q2, which could drive consumer momentum. However, higher inflation and rising equipment prices could weaken sentiment as consumers delay their purchases, he cautioned.

IDC’s top five PC players in India during 1Q2022

HP Inc. shipped over 1.4 million units and continues to lead the overall PC market with a share of 33.8% in the first quarter of calendar 2022. The seller had its largest consumer quarter ever and a strong commercial quarter with a share of 33.2 in 1Q22. % (650,000 units) and 34.3%, respectively.

Dell Technologies secured the second position in 1Q22 with 19.4% share and 22.6% YoY growth. While it was ahead of Lenovo in the commercial segment with a share of 24.2%, it was almost third in the consumer segment. The vendor was second in the enterprise segment with a share of 31.5%, driven by strong momentum from its global accounts.

Lenovo maintained its third position behind Dell in 1Q22 with a share of 17.6%. Vendors achieved year-on-year growth of 20.5%, primarily driven by strong performance in the commercial segment. It saw its second biggest quarter among SMBs, shipping close to 200k units and growing at 37.5% YOY.

Acer Group retained the fourth position with 9.8% market share in 1Q22. Driven by strong demand for commercial desktops, the vendor grew 75% year over year. It had its biggest quarter ever in commercial desktops, shipping over 200,000 units for the first time. The seller also made significant inroads into commercial notebooks, where it saw 56.3% year-on-year growth.

ASUS maintained the fifth position with a share of 6.2% in the first quarter, as it grew at 58.6%. Uninterrupted supply and expansion in offline channels helped the brand grow in the consumer segment. It also hit hard in the commercial segment, where it saw a year-on-year growth of 67.4%.
