Infuse vintage charm into your modern-day decor with these easy tips

If we describe true vintage decor, it would be an amalgamation of various elements from the past, new designs, certain artworks, space utilization, layout and of course the vibes of the residents. There is a certain magic and charm to the old world era, which attracts people to design their homes in vintage style. Match the mood of that era, keeping in mind the modern-day decor. We spoke to Hussain Johar, founder and creative head of Makemyhouse.com, to find out how to beautifully infuse vintage charm into modern decor.

For a rustic and earthy feel, use colors like amber, ginger, dusty rose, chocolate, walnut and a similar palette. Some of the artifacts that add to the charm of such homes are old telephones, wall fans, sewing machines, heavily padded sofas, low hanging ceiling fans, traditional carpets, old dining tables, old mirrors, chests and other such things.

The use of rugs and carpets also helps in optimum space utilization. The right texture is also important. Natural textures like stone or wood help create a comfortable look and avoid an overly designed feel.

If one wants to add a touch of grace and glamor to the living room, then a good old glass chandelier really does the job. Floral patterns would also look great on cushions, curtains and upholstery. Walls can be of two types – monochromatic or with patterned wallpaper. If you decide to cover them with pure white, it is important to pay attention to the appropriate furniture and accessories. Remember, the more design elements, the smaller the number of colors. Talking about laminates, instead of gloss laminates, matte laminates should be used.

The walls can be decorated with black and white family photographs in wooden frames. Instead of wall or kitchen cabinets, the use of niches gives an old world feel. A niche is a recess or alcove in a wall that can be used for display or storage. Even an old iron and kettle in the kitchen can work wonders in giving a vintage feel to the kitchen.

When it comes to bedrooms, a beautiful rug goes a long way in giving a warm and cozy feel. Low lighting is another must as bright light can spoil the mood and vibes of the bedroom. As much as it is difficult to implement in today’s day and age, taking technology out of the bedroom and instead adding elements like books, flowers and plants can let the magic of the old world work.

Vintage is a mix of modern and classic styles and aims to create a living space that is simple, comfortable and evokes nostalgia. It is in vogue and is definitely not going out of style anytime soon. After all, it’s about paying homage to a bygone era.
