Rachakonda Police Commissionerate on Wednesday informed that its chief Mahesh M Bhagwat on Tuesday suspended Inspector S Devendra of LB Nagar Central Crime Station for “gross misconduct”.

The information was neither in the context of the officer’s gross misconduct, nor an explanation of the modus operandi of his crime.

However, police sources said Mr Bhagwat oversaw an internal inquiry against Mr Devendra, alleging that he had withdrawn an amount of Rs. Five and a half lakh from the bank account of an accused in judicial custody.

It was learned that Mr. Devendra, one of a dozen officers lauded by Mr. Bhagwat for nabbing inter-state tire thieves in February, had not submitted payment cards and certificates of the accused person while seizing the property. The card was still in his personal possession and reportedly, Rs 5.5 lakh were debited through ATMs from various locations. The role of the officer’s female friend is also being feared in the whole episode.

Begum Bazar accused tire businessman Kamal Kabra, who was released on bail, had approached the police chief after he noticed several debits in his account statement and investigation was launched.

It is to be noted that Mr. Devendra’s suspension for gross misconduct was not longer than the suspension of another senior officer – Ibrahimpatnam ACP Balakrishna Reddy – in the same LB Nagar area a fortnight ago, for dereliction of duty and alleged corruption in the investigation. of double murder of realtors.
