History and Significance
Scotland is known as the place where the earliest recorded co-operative society was formed. A group of 28 artisans working in cotton mills in the north of England established the first modern cooperative business in 1844. The International Co-operative Alliance, established in 1895, is one of the oldest non-governmental organizations and one of the largest. Measured by the number of people represented, there are 1.2 billion cooperative members.
Global and regional governments and organizations come together and work with the ICA to establish a legislative environment that allows cooperatives to form and develop.
Co-operatives are important because it allows citizens to come together and improve their lives effectively, while contributing to the economic, social, cultural and political advancement of their community and nation. Since they are community based, cooperatives are committed to the sustainable development of their respective communities environmentally, socially and economically.
According to the United Nations, “this commitment can be seen in their support for community activities, local sourcing of supplies to benefit the local economy, and decision making that considers the impact on their communities.”

The theme of this year’s International Day of Cooperation is “Co-operation Builds a Better World”. Using this year’s theme, according to the ICA, it invites cooperatives from around the world to promote how cooperatives with human-centered business models, self-help, democracy, equality, self-responsibility and solidarity. ICA Director-General Bruno Roelants said in a statement that for nearly two centuries, cooperatives have been restoring trust and inspiring hope through dialogue and understanding.
