International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation 2022: The brutal procedure of female genital mutilation (FMG) involves cutting and removing a woman’s clitoris and labia, followed by stitching up most of the vaginal opening. The procedure is usually done on children, by deception and by force. The International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation is an awareness program that seeks to end this abusive practice. This event is held every year on 6 February. Below, we take a look at the theme of this year’s event, its history, and its significance.
Theme
The theme of this year’s observance of the International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation is to accelerate investments to end female genital mutilation. This was announced by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres earlier this month. The United Nations plans to invest in programs that help change the societal norms that impose such practices on more than 4 million girls each year.
History
FMG is prevalent in several African countries, southern Kurdistan, Yemen, the Middle East, Indonesia and Mumbai, among other places in India. Women practice it on children in their families; To suppress their sexual pleasure and to believe that it keeps the victims pure and holy. She also believes that female genital mutilation helps to maximize the pleasure of men during intercourse.
Since the 1970s, attempts have been made to discourage practitioners of FMG by highlighting harmful effects such as chronic urinary infections, menstrual problems, persistent pain, severe bleeding, development of ulcers and complications of childbirth.
The issue came to light in the mid-1990s when Togolese-born Fauzia Kasinja narrowly escaped genital mutilation and later sought asylum in the United States. In 2012, the United Nations General Assembly established 6 February as the International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation.
Importance
FMG violates a woman’s fundamental rights to bodily integrity and health. Although many countries have banned the practice, it continues in secret in some parts of the world. The aim of the International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation is to create awareness about the practice of completely eliminating it by 2030 in accordance with UN Sustainable Development Goal 5.
