Harpreet’s magic and Livingstone’s quick innings highlight Punjab’s victory

Punjab Kings defeated Sunrisers Hyderabad by five wickets in the final group stage match of the IPL played at the Wankhede Stadium on Sunday.

PBKS finished sixth, while SRH – with six losses in their last seven matches – finished eighth.

Chasing 158, the Kings raced home on the back of an explosive knock from Liam Livingstone (No. 49, 22b, 2×4, 5×6).

The British attack on the express Umran Malik provided an exciting fare. With extra cover and sixes over mid-wicket, Livingstone clearly won the fight.

Opener Jonny Bairstow got a life when Umar bowled a full sitter. However, the damage was minimal, as the Englishman was soon clean bowled by Afghanistan pacer Fazlhaq Farooqui. The England batsman engaged in some verbal outings with opponents as soon as he left the park.

Electing to bat, Sunrisers struggled to regain momentum and ended with a sub-par total. Left-arm spinner Harpreet Brar broke the back of Hyderabad’s batting by taking three wickets.

Rahul Tripathi (20, 18b, 1×4, 1×6) was his first victim, sweeping Dhawan wrongly at short fine leg. Abhishek Sharma (43, 32b, 5×4, 2×6) at long-on is taken well by Livingstone.

Harpreet saved his best for South Africa’s Aiden Markram (21, 17b, 2×4), flying him out and hitting the bat with a turn. Harpreet, who was at his best for this season, proved his mettle by dismissing three settled batsmen.

Washington Sundar (25, 19b, 3×4, 1×6) and Romario Shepherd (26, 15b, 2×4, 2×6) put on 58 runs for the sixth wicket.

Australian Nathan Ellis, playing his second match of the season, took two wickets in the final over.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar led Sunrisers in the absence of the unavailable Kane Williamson.
