does instagram know where are you? Yes, every other social media app knows your location, but that doesn’t mean every user of the app knows it too.
Recently a user on Instagram made a post that said ‘People can find your exact location from Instagram’, after a new update iOS who is capable exact location Sharing for the app. The same post further claims that some individuals are using the location to target people who have shared their “exact location” to follow them.
So far no such incidents have been reported as it is just a rumour. That’s not how precise location works iphone or even Android Phone.
When you download an app to your iPhone or Android phone, the app asks for your permission for the camera, microphone, contacts and location to function properly, not to share it with other users. Similarly, apps ask for your location because they may have some feature that requires your location. Instagram needs your location for location tags and the Maps feature, and they say the same in their statement.
How Exact Location works
“Exact location” is not something new that has emerged out of the blue recently. The option to turn “Exact Location” on or off has been around for longer than you might think. Apple first introduced “Exact Location” with iOS 14, and many other Android phones now have this option.
Why is it enabled by default? you can ask. It’s that simple, some apps need to know your exact location in order to work, and that’s why it’s enabled for them.
The ride-hailing app on your phone needs to know your exact location, which is fair. Instagram says it needs your ‘exact location’ for story tags and maps. But, knowing a social media app shows your exact location is something most people won’t be okay with. And that’s why there is an option to turn off the exact location, even Instagram suggests the same, so nothing to worry about.
It’s up to the users, they can choose to share their exact location with “Exact Location” enabled or tell their approximate coordinates to the apps.
