Meditation: In an increasingly stressful world, meditation is becoming increasingly important for both our emotional well-being and our physical health. It can be a relaxation technique as it gives the person a sense of calm, peace and balance. Meditation also helps us deal with stress, but as experts point out, meditating with a purpose is likely to be counter-productive. So while the benefits are many, the practice of meditation is covered with many misconceptions. Bach flower therapist and psychiatrist Indranil Mukherjee, founder and lead alchemist of All That Batch, busts some myths about meditation.
1. Meditation does not mean that you sit for a long time with your eyes closed. You can meditate while brushing your teeth, eating your breakfast, driving your car, or even attending a meeting.
2. You cannot meditate. Meditation is inaction. Even in active meditation, where one needs to move forward, through guidance one is detached from the movement to become a witness, leading to a state of intransitiveness.
3. Yoga is not meditation. You don’t need to bend your body and twist your limbs to meditate. You can also meditate standing, sitting or lying down.

4. Narcotics have nothing to do with meditation. They alter your consciousness and mimic the state of expanded consciousness that you can achieve through meditation.
5. You have nothing to get noticed, or a purpose to accomplish. Trying to reduce stress through meditation can put you under more stress. Meditating with the aim of achieving enlightenment will take you far away from that.
6. Meditation is not consciousness, awareness or mindfulness. It is a tool or path of conscious awareness.
7. There are many methods of meditation and none is better than the other. It completely depends on the meditator, guide and environment how effective a method can be.
8. Meditation is not necessarily a group activity, it requires a lot of tactics. You can meditate alone at your place without any support.
9. The awakening, cleansing or alignment of the chakras is not meditation. These are healing techniques with physical effects that have little or nothing to do with awareness, which is the path of meditation.
10. There is nothing religious or spiritual about meditation. You don’t need to learn strict methods and rituals to meditate. You are a meditator by nature, as a human being. All you need is a kind guide.
