IS says its fighters pulled down power lines in Kabul

The Afghan branch of the Islamic State militant group said on Friday it was behind an explosion that toppled power lines and plunged Kabul into darkness.

Thursday’s power cut was another blow to efforts to stabilize Afghanistan, two months after the Taliban seized control.

In a statement published on its Telegram channels, Islamic State-Khorasan (IS-K) said that “Caliphate troops detonated an electric pylon in Kabul to damage the power sector”.

The blast hit a high-voltage line supplying imported electricity to Kabul and some other provinces.

Afghanistan is largely dependent on imported electricity from its northern neighbors Uzbekistan and Tajikistan, making the cross-country power line a prime target for insurgents.

The Taliban have promised to fight IS-K but the group continues its devastating atrocities.

Earlier this week, IS-K said it was behind suicide attack on shia mosque On October 15, 60 people died in Kandahar.

Meanwhile, two civilians were killed in a roadside bombing targeting a Taliban vehicle in eastern Afghanistan.
