ATK Mohun Bagan beat Hyderabad FC 4-3 in penalty shootout to enter Indian Super League final

ATK Mohun Bagan defeated Hyderabad FC 4-3 in the penalty shootout in the semi-finals of the Indian Super League (ISL) at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan on Monday.

ATKMB beat HFC 4-3 on penalties to book their place in the final of the Indian Super League, where they will face Bengaluru FC on March 18 in Goa.

In their previous meetings this season, in the league stage, both had 1–0 home wins. The first leg of their semi-final at the GMC Balayogi Athletic Stadium. In last season’s semi-final, Hyderabad FC progressed to the final with a 3–2 aggregate victory over Mariners, although ATKMB won the second leg at home.

A mist hung in the air at Salt Lake Stadium as the players went out to warm up ahead of kick-off.

As start time approached, a heavy cloud of smoke enveloped the playing field.

The Mariners broke the haze to get the first try on goal in the first minute, but Kian Giri failed to jump high enough.

Hyderabad had their chance till the 10th minute. Bartholomew Ogbeche and Mohamed Yasir formed a good partnership but his shot from outside the box went over the top.

With the start of play, the instructions from Juan Ferrando and Manolo Marquez became clear and so did the views from the stands.

Hyderabad FC was not going to agree. ATK Mohun Bagan wanted to change that.

The pressure began to tell on the HFC defense as Subhasish Bose’s first time cross, in the 18th minute, was well timed by Gurmeet Singh.

Three minutes later, a short throw-in from the right by Manveer Singh found the feet of Glan Martins. He looked around and drilled it from a distance as the shot went past the left post.

Manveer came closest in the 26th minute. After cutting in from the right, he dropped his shoulder to take a stinging shot past two defenders. The keeper flew to the save but fell just short of the up-right to save his blushes.

Hyderabad managed to survive that blast and was seen hitting ATKMB on the counter. Yasir stole the ball from Ashish in the 26th minute and sent it past Halicharan Narzary but his shot was wide of the target.

The Long Rangers prompted either team to step up and close down the spaces in the middle as the play moved to the wings. Luck ran out there too as clumsy passes and tight marking meant that attacks broke down easily.

After the restart, both keeper Gurmeet and Vishal Kaith were called into action. Poor defending and lack of coordination contributed to the chaos.

In the 57th minute, Gurmeet was admonished for stopping a lovely shot from Hugo Boumous as his side-footed volley in front of goal was parried by keeper Gurmeet.

Chances came and went for both the sides but the score remained the same. The defenders were desperate as yellow cards flashed as well as challenges flowed in.

In the 82nd minute, Slavko Damjanovic had a golden chance to put his side ahead with a Petratos free-kick, but the ATKMB defender did well to stop Odei Onindia but could not make the proper contact with his header.

In extra time, Carl McHugh went over the bar after four corners. No goals were scored for 90 minutes.

Come Overtime, the game became more detailed and physical at the same time. Still the deadlock was not broken.

Means punishment.

Javier Saverio and Bartholomew Ogbeche missed Hyderabad FC’s second and third penalties as ATK Mohun Bagan secured the tie on penalties.
