Islamabad High Court to initiate action against Imran Khan who threatened judge

IslamabadThe Islamabad High Court (IHC) will take up a case against former Pakistan Prime Minister and PTI President Imran Khan for “threatening” a woman judge on Tuesday. The Express Tribune reported that the IHC has taken note of Imran Khan’s statement in which he had allegedly threatened Federal Capital Additional Sessions Judge Zeba Chowdhury and decided to initiate contempt of court proceedings against him .

According to the publication, a three-judge IHC bench headed by Justice Mohsin Akhtar Kayani and Justice Mian Gul Hasan Aurangzeb and Justice Babar Sattar will hear the matter tomorrow.

The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chairman has been booked for threatening a judge and two top police officers at a public meeting held at F-9 Park late Saturday evening. Khan was booked under the Anti-Terrorism Act (ATA).

Meanwhile, the IHC has granted pre-arrest bail to Imran Khan till August 25 after registering a case under the Anti-Terrorism Act. After an FIR was lodged against Imran Khan in the Islamabad High Court, the legal team of PTI today filed a pre-arrest bail application against him.

Hearing the petition, Justice Mohsin Akhtar Kayani asked what were the objections raised to it, according to details provided by Pakistan’s local media outlet ARY News. Responding to the judge, Imran Khan’s lawyer Babar Awan claimed that “Imran’s residence has been cordoned off and he cannot even approach the court concerned”.

Imran’s lawyers, Babar Awan and Faisal Choudhary, filed a petition seeking pre-arrest bail on their behalf in a terrorism case registered for ‘threatening’ a woman judge and senior police officers at a public rally. The pre-arrest bail plea stated that the case was based on “conjectures and conjectures” and that no evidence was available on record against Imran in relation to the case.

It also argued that there was no “direct or indirect” evidence available on record against Imran in the case. Another point that was highlighted in the petition was the assurance that there would be “no chances” of Imran absconding or tampering with prosecution evidence if he is granted protective bail.

It is noteworthy that on August 20, a case of terrorism was registered against Imran Khan for using abusive language and threatening Additional Sessions Judge Jeba Choudhary in his speech in Islamabad. Imran Khan, while addressing a PTI rally in Islamabad, had said that he would file a case against the Inspector General of Islamabad Police, Islamabad Police Deputy IG and Magistrate Jeba Choudhary for torturing PTI leader Shahbaz Gill. Meanwhile, Pakistan Peoples Party leader and former President Asif Ali Zardari has opposed the arrest of Imran Khan. He believes the arrest will cause political damage to the ruling coalition.
