ISRO offers 15-week free course in Remote Sensing, Geographic Information Systems

The Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) and the Indian Institute of Remote Sensing (IIRS) are offering a free 15-week course on the basics of Remote Sensing, Geographic Information System (GIS), and Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS). The graduation level course will start from January 24 and will continue till May 9.

As per the official notice, the course comprises 75 learning hours spread over four modules, namely, Basics of Remote Sensing, Global Navigation Satellite Systems, Geographic Information Systems or GIS, and Applications of Geospatial Technology.

During the course, participants will learn about the fundamentals of remote sensing, earth observation sensors and platforms, thermal remote sensing, spectral signature and visual image interpretation of various land cover features, and hyperspectral remote sensing technology.

The course covers various digital image processing techniques such as image correction and registration, image enhancement techniques, image classification techniques and accuracy assessment.

What will be taught in the four modules?

Remote Sensing and Digital Image Analysis: This module will cover the basic concepts of Remote Sensing, Earth Observation Sensors and Platforms, Spectral Signatures of Various Land Cover Features, Image Interpretation, Thermal and Microwave Remote Sensing, Digital Image Processing with basic concepts of Improvement Are included. and registration, enhancement, classification, and accuracy evaluation techniques.

Global navigation satellite systems: Introduction to GPS and GNSS, receivers, processing methods, errors and accuracy.

Geographic Information Systems: GIS, databases, topology, spatial analysis and open-source software.

RS and GIS Applications: Agriculture and Soils, Forestry and Ecology, Geology and Geo-hazards, Marine and Atmospheric Sciences, Urban and Regional Studies, and Water Resources.

At the end of each module, candidates will have to appear for an assignment or quiz. The final exam will be conducted at the end of the course. Those who qualify the exam will be issued a certificate by ISRO and IIRS on the basis of the internal and final marks obtained by the participants.
