The country’s largest telecom operator Reliance Jio on Saturday suffered a more than eight-hour-long outage in the financial capital, with its customers unable to make or receive calls.
Users of the Mukesh Ambani-led telco faced problems around noon and the company ended the phased restoration of connections only after 8 pm.
As of November 2021, Reliance Jio has 130 million subscribers in its Mumbai circle. The exact cause of the outage, which is rare in the telecommunications industry, was not immediately known.
In a message sent to customers late in the evening, the company acknowledged the problems faced by many customers and also announced a two-day complimentary unlimited plan due to the disruption.
“While our team was able to resolve this network issue within a few hours, we understand that this was not a pleasant experience for you, and we are truly sorry for that,” the message read.
Earlier, a source in the company had said that it is requesting its customers to restart their phones as services are being restored in a phased manner.
Users complained of receiving a message saying they were not registered on the network while trying to make a call, while Jio customers could not get through to the callers.
Some subscribers inquired or vented on social media, and soon the memes started doing the rounds too. As an alternative, several customers talked about using an app like WhatsApp for their calls depending on their Wi-Fi connection.
