New Delhi:

India on Thursday condemned the hasty demolition of a prominent Hindu temple in Canada’s Ontario province and sought action against the culprits. Foreign Ministry spokesperson Arindam Bagchi said the matter has been taken up personally by the Canadian authorities. Unidentified people have defaced the altar and walls of the Swaminarayan Temple in Ontario province with anti-Hindu and anti-India slogans in what Canadian police described as a ‘hate-motivated incident’. Bagchi said, “It is a very unfortunate incident and we condemn it. This issue has been taken up with the Canadian authorities with a separate request that we have made regarding earlier incidents that please hold the culprits and ensure this does not happen again.

“I hope the Canadian authorities are in action,” he said. Violence continued in Jerusalem for a second consecutive night on Wednesday as Palestinians barricaded themselves inside the Al-Aqs mosque in the sensitive compound of the Old City and Israeli police used force to clear them, according to reports.

On questions related to the Jerusalem incident, Bagchi said, “Our position on the question of Palestine is clear and consistent. We are committed to supporting all efforts to resume direct negotiations between Israel and the Palestinians to achieve a two-state solution.
