It’s not about you, it’s about the country: Prakash Amritraj urges Davis Cup team members to keep ego away Tennis News – Times of India

new Delhi: Light Amritraj, once the country’s highest ranked singles player, has urged Indian Davis Cup Squad members to put their egos aside and play as a unit when they take the field on the grass court against Denmark Delhi Gymkhana Club (DGC) here on March 4 and 5. Prakash, who is the son of the Indian tennis legend Vijay AmritrajiSaid that “special things” would happen when the players put the interest of the country first.
“It’s important to realize that it’s not about them, and it’s much more about them, and when one understands this, it allows one to let the ego out, and only then do special things happen. They (Players) are a part of history and a part of all the names that came before the walls, what makes them there today. Suddenly, you bring out more of yourself than you ever imagined,” Amritraj told Davis Cup Media Said to .
Ramkumar Ramanathan, Prajnesh Gunneswaran, Divij Sharan and Rohan Bopanna India will complete their five-man line-up for the World Group play-off match against Denmark. For spectators the world number 97 rune is the highest ranked player in the team. The winner of the two-day rubber will progress to World Group I ties later this year.
Prakash said the hosts will finish their job against Denmark as the visiting team has many high-class players. “The Danish team has a lot of highly-rated players. We will finish our job against them, even though I think we will start as favourites.”
The Indian-American former professional tennis player, whose career was cut short by a sudden shoulder injury, says he is enjoying his life as a sports presenter around the world. “Tennis has a lot of great things in the pipeline and I want to continue to bring the sport that gave me so much. Even more eyeballs, more pop culture, more lifestyle, making it more fun; I want to bring even more. That to the game and there should be a lot of movies and TV, which is also a part of my dream. And look, it’s always going to be hard work, motivation and doing things that no one has ever done. Thought you might. So, if you want any of those, come in, follow me. Knowing the rise of the family has been a joy and something wonderful.”
Prakash also touched upon the controversial vaccination issue involving world No 1 tennis player and 20-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic and said that he respects the Serb’s privacy and conviction. “If he has a reason for not getting vaccinated, I’m not going to judge him for it because I’m not walking in those shoes. So if he makes a certain decision, like all of us, we deal with it.” Whatever the consequences of those decisions are. But having said that, I think Novak was a complete victim in this whole situation because he got the necessary paperwork from the Victorian government and the Australian Tennis Federation. If you had that paperwork ‘So you’re fine to come to the country. And then all of a sudden it happens. He’s humiliated and that’s no way to treat one of the greatest athletes of all time,'” said Prakash, in doubles. Former world number 119.
