The tunnel connecting Himachal Pradesh with Ladakh will be completed by 2025. And the Border Roads Organization (BRO) promises that it will transform the economy of the Zanskar Valley.
BRO Director General Lt Gen Rajeev Choudhary said, the Border Roads Organization (BRO) will start construction of the tunnel connecting Himachal Pradesh with Zanskar Valley in Ladakh by July this year. The Center has already prepared the BRO’s ‘Project Plan’ to execute this ambitious project.
He said the south portal of the tunnel would be at Shinku La and the north portal at Lhakhang.
At present, one has to travel 101 kms from Manali to Darcha on Leh road and after that, turn from Darcha to Shinku La pass and enter the Zanskar Valley.
The DG appreciated the efforts of BRO personnel in taking recourse to Manali-Leh road along with Shinku La-Padum road in record time.

The team of BRO engineers has also shifted from Rohtang Pass to Shinku La. The chief engineer of the Atal Tunnel in Rohtang, Shinku La, will oversee both the construction of the tunnel and the roads connecting its two portals.
The tunnel will help in faster mobilization of troops along the border with China in Ladakh. With the construction of a 4.2 km long tunnel under this pass, the distance from Manali to Kargil will be reduced by 60 km from 355 km to 295 km. It is an alternative to the Manali-Leh-Kargil route.
Chowdhury said, as quoted by Hindustan Times, the tunnel will bring people of Lahaul and Zanskar closer and open doors to tourism in these areas.
