Formerly known as Rhodesia, the southern African country gained independence by: Zimbabwe From Britain on 18 April 1980.

India and Zimbabwe have a long history of close and cordial relations. Minister of State for External Affairs V Muraleedharan called on the Minister of External Affairs and International Trade, Dr. Frederick ShawOn 28 June 2021.
The Ministers reviewed all aspects of bilateral relations, including cooperation in the fields of political cooperation, health, energy, trade, investment and multilateral fora.
India gifted 10 ambulances, which was promised during the Vice President’s visit to Zimbabwe in 2018. A consignment of 35,000 Covaccine vaccine doses was also provided in the month of March 2021. India also handed over three vehicles for Indo-gym technology. Centers for which latest technology machines cost approx. USD 3 million has been supplied under stage Second.
Cooperation in the multilateral sector also continued. During the year 2021-2022, India contributed USD 1 million through the India United Nations Development Partnership Fund for climate-resilient agriculture in Chiredzi and Mangwe districts, which is expected to benefit more than 5000 small farmers.
