The Jamia Millia Islamia administration has canceled the admission of scholar and activist Safoora Zargar, who was arrested in the 2020 North-East Delhi riots case, citing an “unsatisfactory” progress report by the observer.

Ms. Zargar had enrolled in the Integrated MPhil/PhD program in the Department of Sociology. The university said in a notice that the scholar did not apply for extension before “the expiry of the prescribed maximum period”.

talking to Hindu, Ms Zargar said she had been applying for an extension for the past eight months, but it appeared the university had “already decided that they would not oblige”. She said she had also written to Jamia Vice-Chancellor Najma Akhtar that she was being “unjustified harassment and ridicule” at the hands of the administration. “It is difficult for me to process what has happened. I have given three years of my life to my academic pursuit and they have refused to give me an extension. I’ve gone through a lot over the past three years, including jail time, pregnancy, state assault, and online space. I was not expecting this from my university,” said Ms. Zargar.

Responding to the university’s decision, Ms Zargar tweeted on Monday, “The usually snarky Jamia admin is moving at a light speed to cancel my admission, barring all due process. Let it go, it breaks my heart but not my soul. ,

The university said that there was no provision for any further COVID extension as per the UGC notification.

Asked if she would continue to pursue her PhD from another university, Ms Zargar said she had not yet had time to process and decide on what had happened.
