The twins were born on November 5, 1913, on the island of Shodo, Japan.
Guinness World Records has named Japan’s 107-year-old sisters as the world’s oldest identical twins. Named Umeno Sumiyama and Koume Kodama, they have achieved the record for oldest identical twin living (female) and oldest identical twin (female) as of September 1, 2021, at the age of 107 years and 300 days, in a post to the global record keeper. Said on Instagram. The sisters currently live in different places but regularly spend time together.
They were presented with the official certificate by the care home staff as the Guinness World Records staff were unable to meet the twins in person due to COVID-19. Umeno had tears in his eyes as he saw the certificate, but Koume did not fully understand the importance of the award as his memory was no longer the same.
In a social media update, Guinness World Records has shared some pictures of both the sisters. In one of the photos, one of them had a certificate.
The twins were born on November 5, 1913, on Shdo Island in Kagawa Prefecture, Japan, but they started living apart from an early age. After finishing elementary school, Koume left the island to help his uncle. Umeno tied the knot with a man living on the island of Shdo, while Koume married someone outside the island. Later in life, from the late 70s onwards, they began to spend more time together.
one in Statement, the record keeper said that the sisters’ upbringing was akin to a TV drama. As a child, they were bullied for having twins. Twins are both friendly and positive. He has seen two world wars in his lifetime.
The Instagram post has garnered over 46,000 likes and many comments.
