Hairstyling is an art, and Darshan Yevlekar puts this art into hairstyling. Mane Man has created iconic genres for various films including Saawariya, Padmaavat, 83 and Jayeshbhai Jordaar and for stars including Salman Khan, Ranbir Kapoor, Saif Ali Khan and Ranveer Singh.
While he attributes his success to his parents who encouraged him to pursue this profession, he is also grateful for the love and support extended by the industry over the past 20 years.
Their journey of styling Ranveer Singh’s hair started with Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Ram Leela, today the bond completes a decade of cutting edge styles. Stepping up with Ranveer’s style energy in the star’s upcoming release Jayeshbhai Jordaar, Darshan Yewalekar talks to News18 on his bond with Ranveer Singh, his favorite celebrity client and his mentor Sanjay Leela Bhansali. Interview excerpts:
From Ram Leela to Jayeshbhai Jordaar, tell us about a memory from your earlier styling days with Ranveer Singh.
Ranveer had called me for our first magazine shoot. I did my homework about what the magazine is, who the photographer is, what the mood. His body was shot and he had straight hair, and he came and sat down on the chair and asked: ‘Darshan, what do you want to do?’.
I told him that I had something on my mind. At the time, I didn’t have what I wanted to do, but I had something in my mind that would be nice, soft, soft hair and that’s like yes let’s do it and but I told her it would take 45 minutes and she Looked at me ‘really?’ Because it’s really weird for a guy to take 45 minutes or an hour because that’s the amount of time you spend styling a girl’s hair. So, when they said ‘yeah well, let’s do it’ because it was a magazine cover shoot and when I got it done, I could see the gleam in the eyes of everyone in the room when they saw the final product. I think from day one he realized that if he gives me wings… if he gives me space, I can come up with some quality styles.
Ranveer Singh’s fashion style has always been on top. Does he have any special briefs for you when you style his hair?
He joins me in planning everything six months in advance. So, whatever we do now, we have to make sure that we achieve it in six months. We have created this unset format over a period of 10 years, I think it just got implemented. However, that being said, I think someone else is having a conversation about hair. [Ranveer] Immediately says please talk to Darshan as he knows I have all permutations of what can be achieved that day. So that’s the understanding we’ve developed. Ranveer also makes notes, and he shares it with me and asks if this can be achieved or we can do this, or I want to do this. So, I always keep that in mind as well.
So, is there a favorite look?
No, I can’t choose a look. I remember Ranveer and I had a conversation when the first lockdown was lifted. From 2012 to 2019 we were working relentlessly, and those 4 months gave us time to think about what we did [in terms of hairstyles], I think the first conversation we had when we met was ‘Did you see what we did?’
I put all those pictures together and the way Ranveer carries all those hairstyles, I think it is very difficult to pick one. Have had several magazine shoots, one shoot with Gucci, Alauddin Khilji [Padmaavat] See, recently Kapil Dev [83] and jayesh [Jayeshbhai Jordaar],
What is Ranveer’s hair texture and does he take care of it?
She has very straight thick and silky hair. Yes, with every hairstyle, there is a routine. I decide on the right shampoo and conditioner for her hair. I always make sure that depending on the length of the hair and at that point in time if the hair is damaged I decide to change the products. We’ve had regular spa arrangements in between, and I insist on it because when I see that the heating tools are causing too much heat and a lot of blow-drying, we’re sure Let us do spa. at regular intervals.
You have worked with the best in the film industry in over 20 years. Who is your favorite celebrity client?
I feel the passion for the craft and the personalities I have worked with have appreciated my efforts and my craft. So, it is very difficult to decide, but I mean Ranveer is my favorite, he is my boy. I also loved working with Sanjay sir [Leela Bhansali]He has been my mentor. I have completed 5 films with him – Saawariya, Guzaarish, Bajirao Mastani, Padmavat and Ram Leela. He has played a huge role in making me this craftsman in the hairstyling of cinema. The schooling I got behind the monitor was priceless, and I think it was wonderful to be in the company of such a great person and the lessons I learned from him. as well as salman [Khan] Brother. It was through him that I was introduced to the industry. So, these three are my favourites.
