JEE Main Session 2 Day 1 Analysis: Harder maths may hold back some students, Physics had higher but easier marks: Expert

Like the June session, in JEE Main session 2 or JEE Main July session also, the Mathematics section was the toughest of the sections. For students whose basics are not clear or who get bogged down in the language of some difficult questions, maths can be a point to lose.

Questions were asked from all the chapters with emphasis on conic sections and algebra chapters. Weightage was given to chapters including Vectors, Matrices, Probability, 3D Geometry, Complex Numbers in Algebra. Less weightage was given to Calculus, informed Ramesh Butlish, Head FIITJEE Noida.

“The majority opinion regarding the paper was of moderate difficulty level. Subject coverage was extensive in all three disciplines. The paper had some challenging questions. For a large section of the students, the mathematics portion was moderate. As usual, some questions involved lengthy calculations,” said Ajay Sharma, national academic director, engineering, Akash Byju.

Physics was more numerical than theory

According to experts, after Mathematics, Physics was comparatively difficult in the sections and Chemistry was the easiest of the three. “Some questions were taken directly from the NCERT book. Numerical type questions were more in number than theoretical questions and almost all numerical were simple formula-based questions,” Sharma said.

The questions asked from Electrostatics, Magnetism, Current Electricity and Modern Physics as per Battlish. “The calculation of some numerical based questions was lengthy but easy. More weightage was given to general class 11 subjects especially mechanics. Some fact-based questions were also asked from NCERT Class XII chapters,” he said.

In chemistry, physical chemistry and inorganic chemistry were given more weight than organic chemistry. The numerical based questions were easy from Physical Chemistry. Inorganic Chemistry had mostly NCERT questions.

Most of the questions in the numerical value-based section were from Physical Chemistry. The entire paper was NCERT based. Covering NCERT and its examples will be the key to score good marks. Besides chapters like biomolecules, environmental chemistry, regular subjects were presented in the paper, informed Sharma.
