Ciarrochi told The Hollywood Reporter, “Jane’s first reaction was to find an Afghan filmmaker and give him a platform.”

As the world watched Kabul fall and the Taliban return to power in 2021 following the withdrawal of US troops, actor Jennifer Lawrence and producer Justin Ciarrochi were asking themselves what they could do to support women’s rights .

Ciarrochi told The Hollywood Reporter, “Jane’s first reaction was to find an Afghan filmmaker and give him a platform.”

She eventually found director Sahra Mani, whose 2019 documentary “A Thousand Girls Like Me” followed a sexually abused woman’s search for justice.

On Sunday, Mani’s documentary “Bread and Roses” about the daily lives of three women after a Taliban resurgence premiered at a special screening at the Cannes Film Festival.

“The women of Afghanistan have a message in this film, a soft message; Please be the voice of those who are voiceless under the dictatorship of the Taliban, Mani said at the premiere.

The director said in an interview on the Cannes website that she wanted to show the reality of how much life has changed under the Taliban for women, even though filming was difficult. “Now that women cannot step out of the house without a veil, I thought we should tell their stories,” she said.

Mani, who currently lives in France, said the safety of the camera crew and the people being filmed was the top priority.

“The way their lives have changed under the Taliban is an everyday reality for us, this is life under a dictatorship, a brutal reality we cannot ignore.”
