On February 23, Municipal Commissioner Nishant Kumar said that Jinnah Tower would be developed into an iconic center in the city. The commissioner was speaking after inspecting the works related to the construction of 60 feet high flag pole. The Guntur Municipal Corporation has already raised a 40-feet flag and hoisted the tricolor earlier this month.
Responding to concerns about the existing flag pole being removed, the commissioner stated that a 60 feet flag pole would come after a strong foundation was laid.
Jinnah Tower is an iconic structure which was built in the year 1945 in Guntur by his friend Lal Jan Basha in the name of Muhammad Ali Jinnah. Over the years, the tower built in a commercial hub has been an enduring symbol of communal harmony, but controversy erupted this January when some members tried to hoist the national flag on Republic Day. Within hours BJP leaders started tweeting that Jinnah Tower should be renamed. Though the police foiled the attempts of some people to hoist the tricolour, the issue sparked controversy and the YSRCP condemned the move and said there was no need to rename the tower.
A few days later, YSRCP leaders unfurled the national flag. Home Minister M. Sucharita said the BJP was trying to do communal politics in the state.
