jio phone next, Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance Jio’s entry-level Android smartphone, is going to be launched in India by Diwali, Google Chief Executive Sundar Pichai confirmed.
“We have also made progress with co-developed affordable smartphones made for India Reliance. The JioPhone Next device has premium local capabilities and is on track to be launched in the market by Diwali.”
The smartphone was earlier expected to launch on September 10, but was delayed due to chip shortage, disrupting the global supply of electronics devices.
Aimed at first-time smartphone buyers migrating from feature phones, Jio Phone Next is expected to be priced lower ₹5,000 smartphones will run on a custom version of Android called Pragati OS developed by Reliance Jio in collaboration with Google.
Reliance Jio’s plans to make an affordable smartphone date back to July 2020, when the company announced a massive investment ₹33,737 crore by Google for 7.73% stake in Jio Platforms.
In a video released this week, Reliance Jio said that the Pragati OS platform will have a language translation feature with support for 10 Indian languages and a “read aloud” function that will make the smartphone more accessible to users. The smartphone will be powered by a Qualcomm processor and will provide access to Jio apps.
