J&K board exams for 2023 held in March, students say will reduce time to prepare for entrance exams

Like other parts of the country, now in Kashmir, the 10th and 12th examinations will be held in March. Earlier these exams were held in Kashmir in October and November. The Jammu and Kashmir administration has now issued an order for a uniform academic calendar. It said a committee was constituted in April which recommended that the board exams be held in Kashmir in March as well. Although the government has not issued any order for the students up to class 9.

Following the state’s school education department’s order on Wednesday, Class 12 students expressed disappointment and said the decision would reduce their time to prepare for the entrance exam. A Class 12 student said, “The target for them is that after class 12 they used to prepare for NEET and other entrance exams, but now we will get less time to prepare for entrance exams.”

Academic experts are calling it a wrong decision, while private school associations say that service providers have not been taken on board. However, Class 10 students seemed satisfied with the decision. He said that now he will get enough time to prepare for the exam. Those who used to sit at home in winter after the exam will now prepare for the exam during that time.

“It is a very good decision and now we will prepare well for the exam, however in winters we used to wait for the results sitting at home and now it will not happen,” says Muzmil, a class 10 student. “We will take the exam in March and prepare well in winter,” he told News18.com.

On the other hand, GN War, president of the private school association, found this decision incomplete. He said the government did not take the stakeholders on board. He said that the government has given the decision, but the people who have to implement the decision have not been kept in the committee. Since there would be shortage of power and other facilities, the government should have taken the stakeholders along so that a good decision could be taken. In the March season, there will be a lot of trouble in Kashmir due to the weather.

Meanwhile, academic experts also said that this decision will prove to be wrong for the future of the students. He said that if students appear for the exams in March, they will sit at home for the whole year, as it is very cold in Kashmir and stay at home for all three months. Also, when children will appear for exams in March and then again at home by June waiting for results, when will they study? He said the government needs to reconsider the decision so that the education of students in Kashmir is not adversely affected.

Alok Kumar, Principal Secretary, School Education Department of the Government, said that this decision has been taken for the bright future of the children. He said that in winter the teachers will educate the children through digital platforms as everyone has been trained digitally during the COVID-19 pandemic. There will be uniformity and examinations will be held simultaneously. Students will also get time and evaluation will increase.

He further said that with this decision, students will also get an additional 200 days of classroom study. “Those who are not happy with the decisions of the government will protest and it is their job to do so, and if they think about the right future for their children, they will not protest.”
