An assistant professor of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) was kidnapped by a group of people for several hours and subjected to physical assault, threats and extortion following a traffic dispute, the university’s teachers body alleged on Sunday. The JNU Teachers’ Association (JNUTA) said that Sharad Baviskar lodged a police complaint on June 18 and demanded swift action against the culprits.

However, there was no immediate response from the police. In a statement on Saturday, JNUTA alleged that the professor was subjected to a “prolonged violent assault” on the intervening night of 17-18 June 2022. The incident reportedly stemmed from a road traffic dispute.

“Professor Baviskar (who was traveling alone in his car) was forcibly abducted by a group of miscreants after they suggested that the brawl be taken to the police station,” the statement alleged. “He was locked up and taken to a residence in Delhi where he was imprisoned for over three hours. When he tried to reason with his kidnappers to set him free, he was subjected to verbal abuse, physical assault, threats and financial extortion.

JNUTA expressed hope that the Delhi Police will “catch the culprits at the earliest” and guarantee the safety of Professor Baviskar and his family. “JNUTA also expects that the JNU administration will resolve the complaint of Prof. Baviskar with the utmost honesty before the police,” it said.
