Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) The student union created a ruckus over eating and serving non-vegetarian food during Navratri Puja in the university canteen. There has been a clash between the Left and the ABVP student union inside the university. While the Left students have accused the ABVP of stopping them from eating non-vegetarian food. It is later said that he was prevented from performing puja in the hostel during Ram Navami puja.
A complaint has been made to the JNU administration and the local police. The university administration has started an investigation into the matter.
Left students have alleged that ABVP is displaying its politics of hate and divisive agenda and has created a violent atmosphere in Kaveri hostel today. The Left said that they forced the mess committee to change the dinner menu and exclude non-vegetarian items for all students. The menu has both vegetarian and non-vegetarian food items and students are allowed to choose as per their wish.
Left students said that JNU and its hostels are inclusive places for all and not for any particular section. Students from different physical, social and cultural backgrounds have different food preferences and should be respected.
This act of ABVP reflects their exclusionary politics and right-wing Hindutva policies to establish hegemony in democratic and secular places like JNU, the Left said. It added that students will not succumb to such divisive steps and we will continue to fight against such recurring incidents that threaten the inclusivity of the campus.
Meanwhile, the ABVP has said that the Ram Navami Puja was to begin at 3.30 pm, but could start only at 5 pm due to the uproar by the Left. “The University witnessed a peaceful simultaneous celebration of Iftar and Ram Navami. Together this celebration once again established the fact that JNU represents a microcosm of India where different identities coexist peacefully. The Left, however, is unable to digest this fact. Neither in the country nor on campus. As they are planning to break the country, here also they plan to create a ruckus among the students by throwing the issue of ‘non-vegetarian food’.”
