According to Jawaharlal Nehru University Teachers Association (JNUTA), JNU Vice-Chancellor Shantisree Dhulipudi Pandit has said that the academic calendar disrupted due to COVID-19 will be synchronized by December. JNUTA had written to the VC last month asking it to “synchronize” the academic calendar as failing to do so has led to a gap between semesters and academic sessions in the university.
During a meeting with the JNUTA delegation last week, the VC admitted that the university is probably one of the few remaining institutions that have not yet synchronized their semesters. “We were assured that starting from the normal winter vacation of December this year, we will gradually return to our normal academic calendar,” JNUTA said in a statement on Tuesday.
The JNUTA delegation took up “important” issues relating to the faculty of the university with the VC. In particular four issues – CAS (Career Advancement Scheme), promotion, JNU academic calendar, JNU crche and JNUTA membership – were discussed in some detail. JNUTA had written to the VC asking him to “synchronize” the academic calendar which was “disrupted” by the COVID pandemic and prepared for delays in the admission process due to the National Testing Agency (NTA).
The association had noted that from 2020 onwards, this has resulted in a difference in semester and academic sessions at JNU and its teaching faculty has been denied summer and winter vacations. “Incidentally, this has also affected the quality of teaching and learning in the university, as neither the teachers nor the students have got the leave which is essential for maintaining high quality in teaching and absorption of the knowledge imparted. We are disappointed that till date no attempt has been made to synchronize the academic calendar,” JNUTA said.
