A remote village in Jharkhand’s East Singhbhum district has developed a school that looks like a train compartment to motivate students to attend classes. The compartments also have huge snakes and ladders game boards painted on the floor. Developed by journalist-turned-teacher Arvind Tiwari, he says it has been an interesting way to attract students to school.
Their hard work has paid off as the dropout rate in the Upgraded Middle School in Tanggren village of Potka block has now become zero. in present, 269 students from class 1 to class 8 are enrolled in the school. This includes 35 new students who have enrolled after the school reopens on September 24 with Covid-19 restrictions.
Tiwari joined the government school in 2017. Since then they have been implementing innovative ideas to boost enrollment and motivate children to study seriously. The school is located at a distance of about 45 kms from Jamshedpur. He renovated all the three classrooms during the lockdown and made them look like train coaches. The school building now looks like a train from afar.
Talking about his idea of bringing children to school, Tiwari explained the reason for the high number of dropouts in rural areas. He highlighted that tribal children cannot express their problems to those coming from outside and hence decided to break the ice through games and games.
Not only this, he also used to visit villages to inculcate the habit of reading among children and distribute textbooks, story books, pens, pencils and crayons during the lockdown. He used to solve subject-specific problems at their doorstep. He also challenged the students to memorize the tables within the given time period. Reward: He took the students to the screening of Bahubali in Jamshedpur.
Tiwari’s efforts inspired the villagers to donate around 12 kattas of land for the development of the school. He has been awarded district level award this year for his contribution in the field of education.
