The National Commission for Scheduled Castes (NCSC) on April 23 issued a notice to the authorities in West Bengal in connection with the alleged rape and murder of a 17-year-old Dalit girl in Kaliyaganj district, which has been simmering ever since the body was found. For the last few days, local people are clashing with the police.
While police have imposed prohibitory orders in the area, NCSC Vice President Arun Haldar on Sunday visited the spot where the girl’s body was found. He said that the District Magistrate (DM) and Superintendent of Police (SP) of Kaliyaganj and the Director General of Police (DGP) of West Bengal have been directed to submit an action taken report to him in New Delhi within three days.
In a tweet after meeting the victim’s family, Mr. Halder said, “I visited the spot where a 17-year-old SC girl was found gang-raped and murdered in Sahebghata area under Kaliaganj police station in Uttar Dinajpur district Was. on 21.4.2023. I met the victim’s family members at her house in village Gangua. #NCSC @arunhalderbjp
National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) chief Priyank Kanangu also visited the spot taking cognizance of the matter, following which a war of words broke out with the state child rights body.
Mr Halder added in his tweet, “At the time of the visit, the DM, SP and IO were not present at the spot. I inquired why this was the case, and ordered the DGP, DM and SP to submit a report to me personally in New Delhi within 3 days, saying that catching and punishing the culprit should be their top priority.
