‘Kanakam Kamini Kalaham’ movie review: Nivin Pauly’s comedy ends up being a parody of itself

After an initially thrilling set-up, things start to go downhill, with the same ghazals repeated in different ways and the humor being taken to absurd levels.

In an opening credits sequence, reminiscent of old stage drama announcements, Kanakam Kamini Kalaham Clearly declares his intention, that he doesn’t take himself too seriously. Paid hotel staff. The hotel lobby, where the entire ensemble cast comes together, is a scene of riotous humour. From the hotel manager constantly being teased by his girlfriend, a writer who is being teased by an alcoholic for “errors” in his novel, and a couple who are terrified of “gooses” in their bed, nothing is going right at the hotel. . There are a lot of funny moments in these parts.

But then, things start to go downhill, with the same gags repeated in different ways, giving a filmmaker a feeling of being out of ideas. In the end, even the attempted sexual assault is treated in a humorous manner, showing that the screenwriter has completely lost it. Although there are several attempts to downplay the stereotype, the script has an ugly stereotype of a character from a minority community, even though that character also gets some of the best comedic scenes in the film.

Though the filmmaker bravely sticks to the intention of making a full-length comedy, the humor is taken to absurd levels, the film only partially manages to be one. Although it strives to be a social satire, it fails to do so compared to last year’s Papam Cheyyathavar Kallariyat achieved in the same way. Approval for all unique set designs and films, including Stanley Kubrick’s Hotel-Room Horror Shining, in a film that becomes a parody of itself.
