Bengaluru: Legends of Kannada Film Devraji, writer-director Prakash BelavadiEpidemiologist Dr MK Sudarshan and tennis player Rohan Bopanna are among 66 personalities and organizations selected for the Kannada Rajyotsava Awards.
Mid-day meal provider Adamya Chetna and non-profit start-up Phase One are among 10 organizations to present the Amrita Mahotsav State Award to mark the 75th year of independence.
The Rajyotsava Award, presented today, carries a cash prize of Rs 1 lakh, a 10 gm gold medal and a citation.
I was not selected earlier, award came after 14 years: Rohit Kateel
Actor Devraj said he was happy that the government recognized his service, but it was “disappointing” that only one person was selected from the industry. “They should have honored 2-3 more people,” he said.
Belwadi is the third in the family – after her parents and stage legends BN Nani and Bhargavi Narayan – to receive the award. He told TOI that he is glad that he has been selected for his contribution to theatre, though he has also worked in cinema.
Bopanna said he is “really honored” to receive one of the highest civilian awards, to play in an ATP event in St Petersburg, Russia. Another athlete who has received the award is Rohit Kumar Kateel from Dakshina Kannada, an international high jumper. From Karkala, Kateel told TOI that he represented India as the first high jumper at an event in Greece in 1986.
“The award has come to me after 14 years. I am disappointed that I was not selected earlier. This time, international athletes and Olympians recommended my name. Also, the fact that Minister V Sunil Kumar is from my hometown Karkala. It helped me get the award,” he said.
Sources said Health Minister K Sudhakar personally recommended the name of Dr MK Sudarshan, who is the chairman of the Covid-19 Technical Advisory Committee, for his service during the pandemic. “I am grateful to the government for giving me this honour,” he said.
Another Covid warrior, start-up Step One, which was established in April 2020, has been selected for the award. It was started after people realized the need to reach out to doctors during the pandemic and started pooling volunteers. The start-up is working closely with 21 state governments and now has 30,000 volunteers. Most of them are doctors.
Its founder Raghavendra Prasad TS said, “More than half of our volunteers are Karnataka. They do many things including tele-counselling, diet counselling, home isolation monitoring. This award is for all our volunteers and government officials.”
Adamya Chetna is an organization run by late Union Minister HN Ananth Kumar and his wife and BJP State Vice President Tejaswini. His daughter Aishwarya tweeted: “24 years of service, 47 crore hot meals served… I thank the volunteers who made this possible under the guidance of Tejaswini Ananth Kumar.”
