Karma Puja 2022: Various types of festivals are celebrated in Jharkhand and due to the participation of different tribal groups, the festivities here are distinctive and unique. One such festival is Karma Puja, which is considered as the most important festival of the state. This puja is related to the harvest and is a tribute to the Karam tree. Apart from the tribes of this state, Karma Puja is an important event in many other states including Bihar, Assam, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, West Bengal and many more. Karma Puja often takes place in the month of August or September. It is celebrated on the eleventh moon of the Hindu month of Bhadrapada. So this year it will be celebrated on 16th or 17th of September.
Karma Puja Rituals
Before the event begins, the youth of the community go into the forest with a group of drummers and cut one or more branches from the Karam tree. The branches are then carried by unmarried girls who observe a fast. They also collect flowers, fruits and wood, which are important for the worship ceremony. The branch is coated with cow dung and then placed in the middle of the ground. Also it is decorated with flowers. After this the tribal priests offer liquor and grains to the deity.
Importance of Karma Puja
Tribals believe that when unmarried girls observe a fast, they ensure an honest harvest throughout the year. Also, following it sincerely, it is believed that they get a good husband. During this Karam holiday, they also observe a fast for the well being of their family. Married women also observe a fast to ensure the well being of their children and a happy married life.
