Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai met former Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa amid opposition allegations that the BJP government was not doing enough to probe the alleged bitcoin scam. Sources close to Bommai said that the discussion between the two leaders lasted for about 30 minutes late on Friday night.
After meeting Yeddyurappa, Bommai went to the BJP state headquarters and stayed with BJP state president Nalin Kumar Kateel for over an hour.
The importance of the meetings is because Bommai had recently visited Delhi and met the Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other senior leaders of the party including BJP National President JP Nadda. Soon after the meeting, he told reporters that Modi had asked him not to worry and act with integrity and courage in the interest of the people and everything else would be fine.
Bommai had on Thursday paid a two-day visit to the national capital and discussed at length a number of issues, especially those related to the administrative steps taken in the last 100 days since taking over as the Chief Minister of Karnataka.
Describing his visit to the national capital as a success, he had said that some of the initiatives of the Prime Minister during this period are being praised by all. Soon after his return, senior BJP leader and former chief minister Jagadish Shettar reached Delhi, which gave rise to speculations.
The meetings were held amid an attack on the chief minister by Congress for “not initiating appropriate action” in an alleged bitcoin scam involving a hacker.
Congress demands SIT probe under SC supervision
The Congress on Saturday accused the multi-crore bitcoin scam and its concealment by the BJP government in Karnataka and demanded an independent probe by the Supreme Court-monitored SIT. Addressing a press conference, Congress general secretary and chief spokesperson Randeep Surjewala posed a set of six questions to the prime minister and asked what was the role of Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai, who was the state’s home minister when the scam broke out.
Congress leaders have alleged that ‘influential politicians’ are involved in the scam after authorities seized bitcoins worth Rs nine crore from a city-based hacker, Srikrishna alias Sriki, on whom he was involved in hacking government portals, through the dark net. He is also accused of sourcing and paying for drugs from For this through cryptocurrency.
The party has alleged that the size of the scam could be huge as illegal transactions worth Rs 5,240 crore took place in just two days, on December 1, 2020 and April 14, 2021.
The Congress has also asked why Sriki, on “one pretext or the other”, remained in custody for over 100 days when no appropriate action was taken against him. It also sought to know why the RBI was not informed and why Interpol’s assistance was not sought.
The party has also demanded a Supreme Court-monitored probe as it has international ramifications.
