Karnataka CM serves breakfast to a Dalit family; Congress called it a ‘photo-op’ ahead of the election

Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai and BJP strongman BS Yediyurappa had breakfast at the residence of a Dalit man in a village near Hospet on Wednesday. He visited the village as part of the ruling BJP’s ‘Jan Sankalp Yatra’, which began on Tuesday. BS Yediyurappa, BJP, Congress, Basavaraj Bommai, Karnataka

Hirala Kollarappa and her two daughters served VVIP ‘Kesari Bhaat’ (sweets), ‘Mandaki Vograne’ (fried rice with spices), fried chillies and uppittu (upma). According to government officials, Yeddyurappa, Water Resources Minister Govind Karjol and Tourism Minister Anand Singh were accompanying the CM during his visit to Ambedkar Nagar in Kamalapura village of the newly formed Vijayanagar district.

There was a festive atmosphere at the residence of Hirala Kollarappa in Ambedkar Nagar of Kamalapura village. His two daughters Hulijemma and Renuka were busy in the kitchen since morning preparing a special breakfast for none other than Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai of ‘aam aadmi’ on Wednesday, an official statement said. After having food at Kollarappa’s house, BJP leaders interacted with all the family members.

Meanwhile, the Congress described Bommai and Yediyurappa’s eating at the residence of the Dalit family as a “photo-op” for votes ahead of next year’s assembly elections in the state. While Leader of Opposition Siddaramaiah hit out at the ruling party for not doing enough for Dalits and other backward communities so far, AICC general secretary in-charge of Karnataka Randeep Singh Surjewala took a dig at the Bommai government by highlighting an incident. The owner of a coffee estate in Chikkamagaluru allegedly attacked and imprisoned a dozen Dalit workers over financial issues.

Elections are approaching, Dalits, backward classes, SC and ST are starting to remember, till now nothing has been done by this government for their welfare. Now for elections and votes, they are visiting areas where Dalit and backward communities live,” Siddaramaiah, who has come here to participate in the ‘Bharat Jodi Yatra’ led by Rahul Gandhi, said in response to a question. Surjewala said in a tweet, “Karnataka smells of Dalit atrocities under Bommai government – a 54% increase over last year. As Bommai-BSY (Yeddiyurappa) does a photo-op of a Dalit visiting the house, a BJP leader detained 16 Dalits and helpless women lost their child.” Responding to the criticism, the BJP’s state Unit chief Nalin Kumar Kateel said Siddaramaiah has started the Ahinda movement, which has instilled confidence in backward communities and minorities.

He told reporters in Gadag district that the Congress got a majority in the 2014 state assembly elections and Siddaramaiah was the chief minister for five years but “failed” to provide justice to minorities and BCs. It was the Bommai government that gave respect to SC/STs, while Siddaramaiah did nothing in five years.
