The management of a government degree college in Karnataka’s Koppa is in trouble after a section of students came to the college wearing saffron scarves to protest against Muslim women attending classes allegedly wearing hijabs.
The Government Degree College in Balagadi, which had initially acceded to the demand of students wearing saffron scarves and asking women not to attend classes wearing hijabs, has now decided to allow everyone to wear whatever they want till January 10 Is.
College principal Anantha Murthy told PTI-language, We are calling a parent-teacher meeting in which public representatives will also attend on January 10.
He said the decision was taken in a similar meeting three years ago and till now everyone has followed it.
“Everything was going smoothly, but yesterday suddenly some students came to the class wearing scarves. They were objecting to the dress code of some students,” Murthy said.
AB Com second year student Vinay Koppa alleged that Muslim women were coming to college wearing hijabs.
“Three years back, a similar controversy had arisen in the college and it was decided that no one should come to the college wearing hijab, but for the past few days some women are coming to the college wearing it. So, we decided to come. Decided the college is wearing saffron scarves since yesterday,” said the student.
He also claimed that on his request, the college administration had repeatedly asked Muslim women not to wear the hijab on the campus, but they did not agree.
The student warned that if the issue was not resolved, they would intensify the agitation in the coming days.
