Bangalore:

Karnataka on Friday reported 28,723 new cases of COVID-19, including 20,121 in Bengaluru, as it recorded the highest number of tests over two lakh since the start of the pandemic.

The health department said in a bulletin that there were 14 new deaths (Bengaluru – seven).

State Health and Medical Education Minister K Sudhakar tweeted on Friday, “Highest testing since the start of the pandemic with 2.21 lakh tests today.”

The positivity rate stood at 12.98 per cent in the state, where there were 1,41,337 active cases, with the city close to 1.01 lakh.

Mr Sudhakar said that though the cases are increasing day by day, only five to six per cent are getting hospitalised.

“However, it is a matter of concern that the nursing staff is getting infected. So we should not be complacent as it may affect our health infrastructure”, he said.

Experts believe that the third wave in the state may peak by the first week of February and start subsiding by the third or fourth week of next month.

Noting that weekend restrictions have been imposed since last week, the minister said: “We cannot expect infections to subside in seven days. In the first two waves we need at least 14 days to break the chain.” In this it is less. Wave, but the infection is spreading 5-6 times faster”.

“We will get to see the result of the weekend curfew in the next few days”, Mr Sudhakar said.
