MANGALURU: Muslim Ekta Vedik Surathkal, a forum involving office-bearers of 27 mosques in Surathkal, has set a 10-day deadline for the government to provide compensation of Rs 25 lakh to the kin of each. Mohammad Fazili And Masood BFailing which he threatened to hold mass protests.
The heads of various mosques in the Surathkal area warned that they would hold protests with various organizations and secular forces.
Umar Farooq Sakhafi of Badariya Jumma Masjid, Krishnapura told reporters on Monday that the state government and Dakshina Kannada district administration adopted a discriminatory policy when three murders were reported in the district.
“of the three” murder victims, two belonged to the Muslim community. The Chief Minister and Ministers consoled the family of Praveen Nettaru and released an ex-gratia amount of Rs.25 lakh. However, no minister or government representative went to B Masood’s house in Ballare, just five kilometers from Praveen’s house. Similarly, none of them went to the house of Mohammed Fazil, a resident of Mangalapete in Katipalla, who was brutally murdered in Surathkal,” he said.
Objecting to the government not handing over the Masood and Fazil murder cases to the NIA on the lines of Praveen’s case, Sakhafi said the perpetrators, raising funds and instigating the miscreants to commit the murders are yet to be traced.
“The government has handed over the Praveen Nettaru murder case to the NIA. However, in two other cases, only a few have been arrested, and the government has done nothing more. Therefore, the government should hand over all the three murder cases to the NIA or be investigated by senior police officers or a retired judge,” he urged.
Members of the forum said that on the day of Fazil’s murder, a man named Salaam Kana had told Surathkal police that some suspicious persons were following him in a vehicle. He demanded a detailed inquiry into the suspicion that people were being chased for vengeance after the killing of Praveen Nettaru.
Stating that there was no information about the persons who sheltered the attackers after Fazil’s murder, the forum members also wanted to know whether it was a conspiracy to protect influential persons.
