The Karnataka High Court had temporarily banned the hijab in classrooms in Karnataka.
Bangalore:
The temporary ban on religious wear such as hijabs and saffron scarves in Karnataka’s schools and colleges applies only to students and not to teachers, the High Court clarified on Wednesday.
The Karnataka High Court had earlier this month temporarily banned religious clothing as a controversy over Muslim students wearing hijab in classrooms spread across the state and a case surfaced.
Since then, teachers in many parts of the state were not allowed to enter schools and colleges with students wearing hijabs.
On Wednesday, Mohammad Tahir, a lawyer representing a student petitioner, said that teachers were also being stopped at the gate, with Chief Justice Ritu Raj Awasthi clarifying that its order only applies to students.
The court, in its interim order on February 10, had said it was prohibiting students from wearing saffron shawls or hijabs, regardless of religion.
