Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai on Friday said an anti-conversion law would soon be enacted in the state.
Speaking to reporters, Bommai said, “The state government is studying the relevant laws made by other states and soon an anti-conversion law will be framed.”
He was responding to a question about a meeting with a group of saints on Friday to demand a ban on religious conversion.
According to Mohana Gowda, convener of the Hindu Janajagruti Samiti, under whose aegis the event was organized, over 50 saints from various Hindu religious orders met Bommai and stressed on the need for a law banning conversion.
The Chief Minister categorically stated that the Constitution does not permit forced conversions including inducements.
Later, Gowda said in a statement that the delegates included Sri Rama Sena chief Pramod Muthalik, Santosh Guruji, Siddalinga Swami and Pranavananda Swami. Mutalik was quoted as saying that schools and hospitals are being used for religious conversion. He said that many illegal churches are also being built in the state.
The representatives demanded that the converts should be deprived of special benefits for the Scheduled Castes and Other Backward Classes.
