Forced to sit on mats in the bitter cold, students of a government school in Kathua on Monday urged the Jammu and Kashmir administration to provide them with reading desks and fix broken windows of their school building.

The government primary school in Parnuh village of Banyari panchayat of Madhin tehsil does not have desks for the students. Broken window panes of the school building have added to the woes of the students, who are forced to study in the open in extreme cold conditions. Khushi Kumari, a student, said, “We appeal to the administration to provide us desks to study as it is very difficult for us to study on mats in the cold weather here.”

The students said that it is unbearable to sit on the mat on the cold floor. Sat Paul, a villager, said that the school building did not have window panes and grills to prevent cold waves from entering the classrooms and appealed to the authorities to take action in this regard.
