Kawasaki has showcased a hybrid motorcycle prototype

Kawasaki has been filing patents and disclosing hybrid technology in multiple intellectual property filings over the past year or so. Now, the first prototype of a hybrid motorcycle has surfaced at a presentation in Japan. Hybrid models can range from high-performance machines, similar to current H2 models or touring bikes, that will be better suited to absorb the added load of a dual-drive system. Either way, Kawasaki appears to be hard at work on both electric and hybrid systems, and according to the prototype shown, it won’t be long before a full hybrid model is introduced.

The prototype also includes an automatic gearshift system for smooth transition between power modes.

According to Kawasaki, the hybrid system, a relatively small 48V pack located under the seat, could work by using regenerative systems to power up the hybrid battery. Also doing duty is a small parallel-twin engine, bolted to a new tubular steel frame, with a large electric motor mounted above the transmission. In City mode, the bike switches to pure electric power, switches off and shuts down the combustion engine. This mode will be useful when some cities introduce zero emission zones in the future.

Once outside city limits, the hybrid system will drive both the electric motor and the combustion engine to deliver a level of performance that exceeds either. The prototype machine also comes with automatic gearshift, which Kawasaki filed for a patent earlier this year. The system uses an automatic clutch and a servo-operated shifter, allowing for a push button shift.
