Thiruvananthapuram:
The controversial road safety cameras installed on Kerala roads have not only created a headache for the state government but also for a man traveling on a scooter with his girlfriend without wearing a helmet in the capital city.
The details of the traffic rule violation by the man, along with photographs taken by high-end cameras, and sent by the Motor Vehicles Department, created a controversy in his family, which eventually resulted in a police case and his arrest.
The man, who hails from Idukki, was riding a scooter with his girlfriend on the city roads without wearing a helmet on April 25.
Since the wife was the owner of the vehicle as per its registration certificate, the details of the violation committed by the husband and the fine to be paid were sent as a message on her mobile phone.
On receiving the message, the wife asked the husband who is the woman sitting behind in the picture.
Although the 32-year-old man, who works in a garment shop here, claimed that he had no relation with the woman and had only given her a lift on a scooter, the wife did not believe him. There was an argument between the couple regarding this.
She lodged a complaint with the Karamna police here on May 5, alleging that the husband assaulted her and their three-year-old child.
Based on his statement, he was taken into custody. The arrest was registered under IPC sections 321 (voluntarily causing hurt), 341 (wrongful restraint) and 294 (obscene acts) and section 75 (assault or neglect on a child) of the Juvenile Justice Act. a police officer told PTI.
The man was produced before a court, which later remanded him to judicial custody, he said.
Kerala is witnessing an intense political controversy over the installation of cameras on the state’s roads as part of the road safety project ‘Safe Kerala’.
The opposition Congress has made serious allegations of corruption against the LDF government regarding contracts related to installation of cameras.
