Kozhikode:

A 53-year-old woman in Perambra has died of suspected rabies infection despite taking the necessary vaccinations, sources said on Monday.

The woman, identified as P Chandrika of Randeyaru in Perambra, was bitten on her face by a dog on July 21. Sources said that the dog had bitten seven other people from the same area.

Sources further said that he was admitted to the Government Medical College Hospital early last week following some health issues, but died on Saturday midnight. The medical college is awaiting the laboratory test results of P Chandrika’s samples for final confirmation whether she was infected with rabies.

A similar incident occurred in Palakkad district in June this year, which raised questions on the effectiveness of vaccination for rabies infection. Srilakshmi, 19, from Manakara in Palakkad district, had died of rabies despite taking four rounds of necessary vaccinations.
