Former champion Kidambi Srikanth and India’s PV Sindhu have been given the top spot in the men’s and women’s categories respectively as the Yonex-Sunrise India Open badminton makes a comeback after a gap of two years.
The tournament will begin with the main draw from January 11 and no spectators will be allowed at the venue due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Organized by the Badminton Association of India (BAI), the tournament will mark the start of the 2022 international season.
The current World Championships silver medalist Srikanth has gained top billing in the men’s singles category along with world champion Loh Keen Yew and bronze medalist Lakshya Sen to clinch his maiden India Open title.
BAI General Secretary Ajay Singhania expressed happiness that the tournament is progressing and is confident that it will be a huge success like the previous editions.
“The India Open has become an important event on the BWF calendar. We have taken all possible precautions for the safety of players and officials and will try to engage fans through various online platforms and live broadcasts on television.”
Double Olympic medalist Sindhu will lead the charge in the women’s singles category, which also includes two-time champion Saina Nehwal, Busanan Ongbamrungphan of Thailand and up-and-coming Jia Min Yeo of Singapore.
Sindhu, the winner of the 2017 edition, said it would be a bit disappointing to play without fans but she was inspired like anyone to win her second tournament title.
“I have always looked forward to playing in New Delhi as India Open is always crowded with great atmosphere as winning a tournament at home is always special for any player.”
Men’s singles top seed and former champion Srikanth said the tournament gave him the right opportunity to build on his World Championship success.
“It is a long season for all of us with the Asian Games and Commonwealth Games due later this year. Starting the season at home gives me the perfect opportunity to start the year with a win.”
The 10th edition of the tournament, which is being held in early 2020 after a gap of two years following the coronavirus outbreak, will see participants from 19 countries across five categories.
World Championships bronze medalist Lakshya Sen is also keen to make a mark in his first appearance in the domestic tournament.
“I have always been looking forward to playing the India Open. I had to wait for two years due to the coronavirus pandemic but I am confident of doing my best this week.”
Due to the restrictions related to COVID, strict protocols are followed and all players have to undergo mandatory tests before entering the venue.
Sunrise Sports India Pvt Ltd Managing Director Vikramaditya Dhar stressed that supporting the tournament is part of their commitment to the sport.
“Badminton is one of the most popular sports in the country and Yonex-Sunrise India Open has been instrumental in bringing top-notch badminton to the country.
“As badminton action resumes after a break of two years, we are committed to doing everything that helps the sport grow,” Dhar said.
